EU To Support Nigeria In Establishing SGBV Courts.
The need to support Nigeria in establishing sexual and Gender based Violence Courts has been emphasized by the European Union. The move the body noted is part of efforts to mobilise action towards fast-tracking prosecution of sexual and gender-based offences in Nigeria and guaranteeing access to justice and remedies for victims of sexual assault. EU Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Samuela Isopi, who disclosed this in Abuja said the gesture is expected to stem SGBV and bring succour and justice to victims. Ms Isopi further highlighted other SGBV interventions including establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in 19 states of the Federation with financial support of about 1 billion naira. The envoy says the EU will continue to cooperate with Nigeria in the area of post-Covid reconstruction, climate change, immigration, youth agenda, strengthening of democratic structures, among others.
