Regional Cooperation: Ecoparl’s Speaker Strengthens Ties With Gambia’s National Assembly.

Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has played host to the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Right Hon. Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima, in a significant move to bolster regional cooperation and parliamentary development.

Speaker Ibrahima’s visit to Banjul, The Gambia is part of her participation in the Delocalised Meeting of the Joint Committee on Trade, Customs and Free Movement, as well as other committees, from August 26th to 30th, 2024.

The meeting aimed to discuss critical issues affecting the region, including trade, customs, and free movement, as well as legal affairs, human rights, social affairs, gender, women empowerment, and persons with disabilities.

During their meeting, the two Speakers engaged in fruitful discussions on parliamentary development, exploring ways to enhance the capacity of the ECOWAS Parliament and strengthen ties between the regional parliament and national assemblies.

Speaker Ibrahima commended The Gambia’s representation within the regional parliament.

“The Gambia’s representation in the ECOWAS Parliament is truly commendable, and we look forward to continued collaboration and knowledge sharing,” she said.

Hon. Jatta on his part, welcomed the ECOWAS Parliament Speaker, expressing his appreciation for her visit.

“We are honored to receive Speaker Ibrahima in The Gambia, and we emphasize the importance of continued collaboration between our parliaments. Our meeting today demonstrates our commitment to regional integration and cooperation,” he said.

The visit underscored the importance of strengthening ties between the ECOWAS Parliament and national assemblies, as well as enhancing regional cooperation to address common challenges and promote economic development, peace, and security in the region.
