The Federal Government has assured of commitment to promotion of inclusive education in the country. This is as the government has directed tertiary institutions to offer admissions to all candidates with disabilities that possess minimum admissible scores into the programmes of their choice after writing the unified Tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

Minister of state Education, Dr Yanko Sununu gave the indication at the first Africa Regional Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education held in Abuja.

Sununu who described the conference as an important milestone for Africa’s commitment to full inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life, reafirmed the commitment of the present administration to eliminate barriers that have historically marginalised vulnerable Nigerians especially persons with disabilities.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB, Prof lshaq Oloyede outlined various interventions by the board to promote inclusive education, insisting on policies by government for the establishment of a centre for supportive services for PWDs.

As expected the conference attracted key stakeholders in the education sector, including Prof Peter Okebukola who in their remarks applauded the initiative.

It is expected that communique and recommendations from the 2 day meeting will complement already existing efforts by government to promote inclusive education in Nigeria.
