Speaker Seeks AWALCO’s Support To Sustain ECOWAS Stability, Regional Integration

The new Speaker and first female to head the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Parliament, Maimunatu Ibrahima says effective communications have significant role to play in the stability of the subregion.

She disclosed this when the Executive of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents, the press corps that covers activities of the parliament paid her a courtesy visit at the ECOWAS Parliament’s Secretariat in Abuja to congratulate her on her new role as Speaker.

The Speaker said it will be very challenging to achieve the parliaments goals of promoting regional integration and development in West Africa without the quality input of the association.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with your institution and appreciate your willingness to collaborate. Communication is key to success. Without effective communication, it’s challenging to achieve our goals.

“Thank you for the gift and I look forward to our continued partnership,” she said.

Leader of the delegation, and the President, Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO) Innocent Odoh assured the new Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, of the association’s commitment to support her to succeed in her new responsibility.

Mr. Odoh reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthen the existing partnership between AWALCO and the parliament.

“We are proud to have you as our Speaker. Your experience in parliamentary affairs will undoubtedly bring a lot of value to our partnership.

“We wish you well and are confident that, by the grace of God, we will achieve our set objectives,” he said.

The visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between the ECOWAS Parliament and AWALCO to achieve the Parliament’s objectives as well as fostering a stronger partnership.
