The National Sugar Development Council, NSDC, has assured that the ongoing reforms by the Council and expansion plans by operators will make thousands of jobs available for Nigerians.

The Executive Secretary, Kamar Bakrin disclosed this in an interview with Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria, CICAN in Abuja.

He said based on the mandate and new targets given to the major sugar operators by the Council, they have embarked on an aggressive expansion that will create high-paying jobs for Nigerians in the coming months.

The NSDC boss who emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing community hostility, a long-standing challenge in the sugar industry said key strategies have been incorporated into the second phase of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan to tackle the issues.

He however, noted that the expansion plans of existing sugar producers have led the council to identify 14 new “greenfield” sites ranging in size from 6,000 to 18,000 hectares, across the sugarcane belt with high viability for sugar production.
