World Standards Day: Collective Efforts Required To Attain SDGs – SON

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria says the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in seeking to address social imbalance could be achieved through the use of available tools like standards and conformity assessment.

The Director-General, SON, Farauk Salim who disclosed this at the commemoration of the 2022 World Standards Day in Abuja said public and private partners are also required to attain the SDGs components of sustainable economy development as well as slow the rate of climate change.

“The intense battle against a persistent global pandemic has shown the absolute necessity of addressing the SDGs in an inclusive way, to strengthen our societies and make them more resilient and more equitable.

“Therefore, today we are asking you to join us on a mission that affirms the importance of the SDGs to build back better. In this pursuit, standards are more relevant than ever” he said.

Mallam Salim also said the agency is working with International bodies to raise awareness on the significance of standardization globally among the consumers, regulators and industries alike adding that the the World Standards Day is celebrated to raise public consciousness about this year’s focus which is the SDGs.

“From the ability to travel efficiently, to accessing fresh water, cleaner energy and ensuring standard safety and security measures; this day is dedicated to the importance of implementation of globally acceptable technical standards.

“This year is being jointly coordinated by members of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the International Standards Organization (ISO)” he said.

The theme of this year’s World Standards Day is “Standards for Sustainable Development, a Precursor for Growth”.
