2023 Polls: INEC Orders RECs To Provide Data On Security Flashpoints Nationwide
With barely nine months to the 2023 General Election, the security situation in the country and its impact on the electoral process is a source of concern to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
This has led to the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu at the second quarterly meeting with Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security at INEC Headquarters in Abuja to tasked Resident Electoral Commissioners to provide basic data on areas faced with security challenges in their states including citizens living in Internally displaced persons camps.
He said with the data, the commission and security agencies will know areas of interest to focus on in order to have a hitch-free and credible elections.
The INEC boss also noted that nine months is enough time for security agencies to respond to the insecurity challenges bedeviling country for polls to take place nationwide. In his remarks the National Security Adviser, Retired General, Babagana Mangunu, represented by a staff in his office, Sanusi Galadima expressed concern on the growing uncertainty that could herald the conduct of party primaries as well as the forth coming Ekiti and Osun state elections.
The NSA also harped on need for INEC to enjoin political parties to consistently abide by prescribed rules as outlined in their respective manifestos in order to reduce areas of conflict and ensure a peaceful atmosphere for a hitch free election.
