The Accord Party has called for the immediate release of about 60 of its members allegedly arrested by the Nigeria Police in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Speaking to journalists at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja, where the party submitted a petition, the spokesperson for the Accord Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, alleged that the arrests were part of a wider campaign of intimidation targeting the party’s members across the state.
He also claimed that the party’s candidate for Ijesa South, Hon. Popoola Alaba, was being unlawfully detained and urged the Inspector-General of Police to either release him or charge him to court.
Olajengbesi further called on the Inspector General of Police to reassure Nigerians that adequate security measures would be put in place to guarantee a free, fair and credible governorship election in Osun State.

The Accord spokesperson also alleged that the reinstatement of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, who he said had earlier been removed, could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
