Nigeria and the Republic of Austria have committed to deepening their bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across renewable energy, security, and trade following high-level diplomatic talks in Abuja.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA News.

According to the statement, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumiegwu-Ojukwu, met with the Secretary-General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of International and European Affairs, Nikolaus Marschik, to review the 50-year-old relationship between the two nations and chart a path for future engagement.

Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu identified several strategic sectors for immediate collaboration, including renewable energy, green technology, food security, and digital innovation.

She urged Austrian private-sector players to utilize Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a gateway to the broader continent.

“Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms are designed to attract long-term, value-driven investment,” the Minister stated, noting that Austrian expertise in infrastructure and agro-processing aligns with Nigeria’s current development goals.

The discussions also touched on regional stability, with Nigeria briefing the Austrian delegation on counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel and West Africa. The Minister emphasized that global insecurity requires “collective action and shared responsibility.”

On the issue of migration, both parties agreed on the need for orderly, regular pathways.

The Minister proposed a focus on skills development and vocational training to empower Nigerian youth, framing migration as a tool for mutual development rather than a source of instability.

In response, Secretary-General Marschik reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as one of Austria’s “closest and most important partners in Africa.”

He revealed that Austria is developing a modern Africa strategy based on equality and mutual learning, moving away from fragmented sectoral policies toward a results-oriented framework.

Marschik also expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support of Austria’s United Nations Security Council candidacy, signaling a reciprocal commitment to Nigeria’s future multilateral goals.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to boost educational exchanges. Austria offered training opportunities for Nigerian officials at the Austrian Diplomatic Academy, while both sides pledged to revive existing memoranda of understanding on cultural and academic partnerships.

The engagement marks a strategic step toward a more inclusive Nigeria-Austria partnership, aimed at delivering tangible economic benefits while contributing to global stability.
