BRICS Leaders Pledge Stronger Action Against Racism, Hate Speech Ahead of China’s 2027 Presidency
Ahead of China Presidency in 2027, BRICS leaders have pledged to intensify efforts to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance, according to a resolution adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The resolution expresses concern over the rise of hate speech, disinformation and misinformation, and calls for stronger international cooperation to address discrimination based on religion, faith, belief and other contemporary forms of intolerance.
Leaders stressed the importance of promoting mutual respect, inclusivity and dialogue while tackling emerging challenges linked to discrimination and social divisions.
The resolution reflects a shared commitment among BRICS members to counter hate-driven narratives and strengthen cooperation in addressing racism and intolerance.
The commitments are expected to remain a key priority when China assumes the bloc’s rotating presidency in 2027.
The summit declaration also voiced deep concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East and West Asia.
Recalling their respective national positions, BRICS leaders called for maximum restraint and urged all parties to avoid actions that could worsen the situation.
They emphasised the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in line with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The leaders encouraged greater use of dialogue and diplomacy to achieve long-term peace, security and stability in the region.
The declaration further stressed the importance of maintaining the smooth flow of global trade, supply chains and energy in accordance with international law.
BRICS leaders also expressed serious concern over deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities operating under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying such actions violate international law and relevant IAEA resolutions.
They underscored that nuclear safeguards, safety and security must be maintained at all times, including during armed conflicts, to protect people and the environment from harm.
