The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has foiled a vehicle fraud attempt in Gombe State, recovering a car suspected to have been stolen since 2021 during a routine number plate revalidation process.

The incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Office, RS3.2 Gombe Sector Command, when an applicant presented documents for number plate conversion.

In a statement, Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, said discrepancies were detected during verification of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), prompting further inspection.

According to him, a detailed check revealed inconsistencies between the VIN on the submitted documents and the chassis engraving on the vehicle, confirming suspicion of foul play.

Using the NVIS platform, FRSC officials traced the registered owner, Mrs. Cecilia A. Duru, who confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen in 2021 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She subsequently provided valid proof of ownership.

The individual in possession of the vehicle claimed to have purchased it from a third party, raising further suspicion.

The Corps said it acted swiftly to secure the vehicle and prevent its disappearance, highlighting the effectiveness of the NVIS in tackling vehicle related crimes.

FRSC urged members of the public to exercise caution in vehicle transactions and to make use of official verification platforms to avoid falling victim to fraud.
