The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Aisha Garba, says over 8.7 million learners have benefited from improved learning conditions and materials as reforms in Nigeria’s basic education sector begin to yield results.

Speaking at the opening of the 29th quarterly meeting of UBEC management with State Universal Basic Education Boards in Abuja, Garba said more than 244,000 teachers have been trained in inclusive pedagogy and digital literacy.

She attributed the progress to reforms under the 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, describing it as a transition from diagnosing systemic challenges to implementing coordinated, large-scale interventions nationwide.

Garba also disclosed that UBEC unlocked over N100 billion in previously unassessed matching grants through data-driven advocacy, with 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory now accessing the funds.

In his remarks, the Chairman of SUBEB in Kwara State and Dean of SUBEB Chairmen, Shehu Adaramaja, acknowledged the ambition of the digital reform agenda but cautioned about practical challenges.

Stakeholders at the meeting also emphasised the need to prioritise the practical implementation of digital tools to improve coordination, accountability, and learning outcomes across the country.
