The Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning and transforming the Nigeria Police through the education sector, including the upgrade of the Police Academy and other training institutions nationwide.

Alausa made this known on Monday during a meeting in his office with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, alongside former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, and other senior police officers. The meeting focused on plans to establish a southern campus of the Police Academy.

According to a statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Ikharo Attah, the minister stressed the need to support the police in delivering on their mandate. He noted that the initiative aligns with the President’s broader agenda to strengthen security through institutional reforms.

Discussions at the meeting centred on infrastructure design and physical planning for the proposed Police Academy campus in Erije, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The minister directed the National Universities Commission to fast-track resource verification, with a target for the new campus to commence academic activities and admit its first set of students between September and November 2026.

The meeting also reviewed the capacity of over 42 police colleges across the country, with plans to upgrade them into monotechnics to enhance technical and professional training.

The minister noted that a presidential waiver already exists to facilitate the transition, while efforts are underway to accredit selected institutions to offer industry relevant courses critical to policing.

To drive the reforms, three committees were constituted, covering resource verification, capacity improvement in police colleges, and infrastructure development for the new academy campus.

Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmed, commended the initiative and assured the police leadership of the ministry’s support.

In his remarks, IGP Disu highlighted the importance of education in addressing challenges across sectors, including policing, and reiterated the Force’s commitment to introducing courses that will directly enhance personnel capacity and national security.
