The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving teachers’ welfare, professional development and working conditions as technology and artificial intelligence reshape the education sector.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, stated this at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Commemoration and President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards ceremony.

Speaking on the theme, “Protecting and Advancing the Status of the Teaching Profession in a Rapidly Changing World,” Alausa said teachers remained indispensable to national development, despite the rapid changes in how knowledge is accessed and delivered.

He said artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies could support teachers and enhance learning, but could not replace the professional judgement, encouragement and human connection of skilled educators.

Also speaking at the event, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, highlighted his administration’s investments in school infrastructure, teacher welfare and digital education.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, called for improved remuneration, better working conditions, continuous professional development and adequate teaching and learning resources.
