Former Nigerian Foreign Minister Urges Renewed International Strategy for Sahel Security

12

Former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has called for intensified regional and international intervention to resolve ongoing armed conflicts in the Sahel region.Speaking at the annual Oslo Forum, Tuggar warned that persistent insecurity in the region continues to endanger lives, threaten state stability, and stall progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).In a press statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar emphasized that sustained dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and collaborative international action are critical to addressing the volatile security situation. He highlighted the role of platforms like the Oslo Forum in assembling mediators and policymakers to establish practical pathways to peace. The security crisis in the Sahel—a region spanning several West African nations—has faced escalating violence from insurgent groups, leading to political instability and severe humanitarian challenges in recent years. This year’s Oslo Forum, co-organized by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, convened approximately 150 conflict mediators, experts, and global policymakers. Hosted by Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, the summit focused on global warfare, international humanitarian law, and maritime security, with dedicated sessions on West Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Horn of Africa.High-level attendees at the summit included Kenyan President William Ruto, various foreign ministers from the Sahel region, the United Kingdom’s National Security Adviser, and China’s special envoy for the Middle East, alongside representatives from the United Nations and civil society organizations.
