Nigeria and Israel Strengthen Ties with Pacts on Border Security, Health

41

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the State of Israel have pledged to deepen their strategic partnership, focusing on border security, healthcare, and technological innovation to address shared challenges.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at the Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja.

Focus on Security and Technology

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted the necessity of learning from Israel’s expertise in border security management, noting its relevance to Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency and terrorism. She emphasized that the full operationalization of the Nigeria-Israel Joint Commission would be key to unlocking these collaborative benefits.

”Nigeria has so much to learn from Israel,” the Minister stated, adding that the partnership would extend into defense intelligence, economic cooperation, and religious tourism.

Major Health Initiative: Ambulance Donation

A significant highlight of the bilateral talks was Israel’s commitment to donating 60 fully equipped ambulances to Nigeria. Ambassador Freeman confirmed that his country is already coordinating with the Federal Ministry of Health to facilitate the delivery.

”This is a significant package to save lives,” Freeman said. “We will also make arrangements to train the people that are going to man them.”

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the initiative, noting that it would help establish a much-needed “ambulance culture” and improve the efficiency of first responders in Nigeria.

Economic and Agricultural Support

Beyond health and security, the discussions touched on:

  • Food Security: Deployment of Israeli agricultural technology to boost Nigerian crop yields.
  • Capacity Building: Exchange of study tours and technical expertise.
  • Diplomatic Synergy: Increased solidarity on critical issues at the multilateral level.

Building on the 2025 Dialogue

This meeting follows a comprehensive Political Dialogue held in August 2025 between Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharren Miriam Haskel-Harpaz.

According to a statement by Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the Minister, both nations remain committed to the 2025 joint communique, which prioritized counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and the use of innovation for immigration and consular matters.

Ambassador Freeman reiterated that as Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria remains a strategic partner for Israel, and that the bond between the two states will continue to be strengthened through official visits and sustained international dialogue.
