FG Condoles With Spain, Serbia Over Disasters
The Nigerian government has expressed shock over the news of devastating flash floods that struck the Valencia region in eastern Spain, on Tuesday, 29th October, 2024, claiming 158 lives and several others missing.
This was contained in a statement to commiserated with the Spanish and Serbian authorities, signed on behalf of the Nigerian Government by the Spokesperson, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA
The statement said, the death toll in Spain disaster raised to 202, according to authorities, and there are fears of a possible rise as the days unfold.
“It comes after buildings and bridges were swept away while towns became submerged in a muddy deluge, with overturned cars scattered in the streets after more than a year’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours earlier this week.
“Among the casualties was footballer Jose Castillejo, who was 28 and had played for a number of clubs in his home country, including the La liga giants, Valencia FC.
“Nigeria stands with Spain at this tragic moment and therefore conveys its deepest condolences to the people of the Kingdom of Spain, while praying for the families of the victims,” the statement read.
In a related development, the Nigerian Government also expressed sadness over the news of an incident that claimed the lives of eight persons at a railway station in Serbian town of Nova Sad.
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria has received, with a deep sense of sadness, news of an unfortunate incident at a railway station in the Serbian town of Nova Sad on November 1, 2024, which resulted in the death of eight people, leaving two others hospitalised.
“Nigeria commiserates with the people and Government of the Republic of Serbia in the midst of this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the dearly departed,” the statement concluded.
