Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has called for a review of existing laws establishing the National Examination Council (NECO).
Governor Bago made the call at q one day retreat by NECO titled “Legislative Functions: The Imperatives of Achieving NECO’s Mandate and the Challenges of Examination Legislation in Nigeria,” held in Abuja.
He said the review will instigate reforms that will be in tandem with technology, time and innovation as well ensure the integrity of NECO examinations.
Earlier, the minister of State Education, Hon. Tanko Sununu, represented by the permanent secretary, federal ministry of education, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, commended the retreat initiative and urged participants to actively engaged in the discussions to enable NECO effectively achieve its mandate.
Meanwhile, the Registrar of NECO, Prof Dantani Wushishi in his remarks highlighted challenges including inadequate funding, examination malpractices, amongst others as some of the key hurdles faced by the examination body, hence the need for a review of the existing laws of the Council.
Delivering the keynote address, majority leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Julius Ihonvbere justified the call for a review of NECO Laws but was quick to add that the proposal demands the full support of both the executive and legislature to scale through.
