Nigeria Launches First-Ever Reputation Index To Track Global Image
The Federal Government has officially designated national reputation as a critical strategic asset, essential for enhancing Nigeria’s global standing and diplomatic effectiveness.
Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the assertion on Thursday during the presentation of the Maiden Nigeria Reputation Perception Index (NRPI) Report 2025. The event, held at the National Assembly Library Complex, marks the launch of an initiative by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to quantify how the nation is viewed both at home and abroad.
Represented by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Minister described the report as a “landmark, evidence-based instrument.” He noted that a nation’s reputation is no longer a passive concept but a functional tool that directly influences investment confidence and foreign policy outcomes.
Shift from Reactive Image Management
A central theme of the Minister’s address was the shift toward proactive reputation management. The report highlights that:
- Data-Driven Policy: Perception analysis should be integrated into the core of public policy and diplomatic engagement.
- Closing Gaps: The Index provides a framework to identify and bridge the gap between internal realities and external perceptions.
- Narrative Control: Strategic communication must move away from reactive “damage control” toward a coordinated national narrative.
High-Level Stakeholder Engagement
The presentation was chaired by the Deputy Senate President and attended by a broad coalition of diplomats, legislators, academics, and public relations experts. Discussions centered on the rigorous methodology used to compile the Index and its implications for Nigeria’s economic and governance sectors.
By utilizing “perception intelligence,” the government aims to reposition Nigeria as a responsible and forward-looking global actor.
Commitment to Collaboration
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its partnership with the NIPR and other stakeholders. Moving forward, the Ministry intends to use the Index’s findings to ensure that Nigeria’s international engagements are supported by coherent messaging and sustained institutional coordination.
The move signals a significant step in Nigeria’s public diplomacy, treats the nation’s “brand equity” as a pillar of national development.
