China-Nigeria “Golden Bridge”: 200 Million Now Learning Chinese Globally
The China Cultural Centre in Abuja became a hub of diplomatic and cultural exchange as officials, journalists, and students gathered to celebrate the 17th International Chinese Language Day.
The event, held during the traditional Chinese solar term of “Grain Rain,” highlighted the growing linguistic and strategic partnership between Nigeria and China.
In his welcome address, Counselor and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, described the Chinese language as a “genetic link” carrying 5,000 years of civilization.
He noted that Chinese is now taught in over 190 countries with more than 200 million international learners.
He emphasized that the language serves as a “golden bridge” in three specific areas.
At the occasion with the theme, “Chinese: Sparkling Colorful Dreams,” the Director outlined a vision where language transcends simple speech, acting as a triple-threat for bilateral growth.
He pointed out China and Nigeria c55 years of diplomatic ties and the launch of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) which is said was strategic to the bilateral ties.
Mr Jianxing noted that language is a “deep resonance” between Chinese philosophy and Nigerian cultural values of coexistence, adding that proficiency is framed as a “strategic shortcut” to tap into the new Five-Year Plan’s high-quality development goals.
He specifically lauded Nigerian students who study after work hours, calling them the engine of national development.
”You are working hard not only for yourselves, but for the development of your country and your nation, I really respect you.” Yang told the gathered students.
Timed with the “Grain Rain” solar term honoring the legendary inventor of Chinese script the 2026 celebration marks a shift toward deeper people-to-people exchanges.
“Officials aim to use this momentum to push the China-Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership to an “unprecedented level.”
A focal point of the celebration was the success of the “Ni Hao China” radio program. Dr. Mohammed Bulama, Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Dr. Mohammed Bulama who was represented at the occasion noted that the initiative aims to teach Mandarin and promote cultural understanding, fulfilling bilateral agreements signed in late 2024 to boost trade and tourism.
”Language is the soul of a people,” Dr. Bulama stated, reaffirming FRCN’s commitment to using its platform the largest radio network in Africa to foster intercultural dialogue.
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council,Comrade Grace Ike, praised the “exceptionally cordial relationship” between the Chinese Embassy and the local media.
She noted that effective communication and linguistic diversity are essential for balanced reporting and building enduring partnerships in technology and education.
