Teledensity, Internet Subscription Slides Further within Five Months – NCC

Statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have revealed a further decline in the the sum total of all active telephony subscribers and teledensity as well as the number of active subscribers for data (internet) services on each of the licensed service providers utilizing the different technologies.

Latest report on the performance of the industry, which was released yesterday, June 22 2021 by the NCC showed that the sum total of all active telephony subscribers and teledensity as calculated on monthly and annual basis fell from 188,705,734 in the April to 187,026,517 in May, 2021.

The decline for the year under review started in January dropping from 200,213,994 to 196,078,494 in February until it landed in the present figure that brought it from 98.86% to 97.98%, a difference of about 2%.

Similarly, the number of active subscribers for data (internet) services on each of the licensed service providers utilizing the different technologies, i.e. GSM and CDMA recorded a stead decline moving from a total of 141,765,721 in April to 140,488,490 in May.

Just like the case of the active telephony subscribers and teledensity, the decline for the number of active subscribers for data for the period under review began in January dropping from 151,296,836 to 148,518,720 in February.

According to the NCC’s report, the steady decline was relatively more in the GSM and VoIP sector while that of the GSM decline was steady that of the VoIP was rising and falling.

The Commission disclosed that market share by operator leadership still resides with MTN Nigeria with a subscriber base figure of 74,044,687 followed respectively by Airtel 50,026,788; Globacom 49,781,215 and 9Mobile 12,842,775.

Broadband subscriptions in Nigeria also sustained a decline dropping from 77,605,500 in April to 75,569,442 in May. The fall in broadband penetration also started in January from81,949,983 to 80,280,149 in February.
