WTO Will Support Nigeria To Enhance Its Dwindling Trade Share – Okonjo-Iweala
As part of her thank you visit to Nigeria, the Director General, World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in Abuja to brainstorm on how to assist the government reposition its global trade.
Speaking at the meeting, the WTO Director General, expressed disappointment on Nigeria’s share in World Trade which is only 0.33% and its 19% share in Africa trade that is a fraction of the country’s potential.
She explained that, however, in world trade, Nigeria is active in the area of agriculture and joint Statement initiatives adding that the WTO will work with Nigeria to help deliver support directly with its resources in technical assistance, training and quality upgrade in unlocking some of the bottlenecks that confronts the country.
The Ministers who took turns to Congratulated Dr. Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment informed her on some of the country’s expectations regarding engagements in on going negotiations and discussions.
They further urged the WTO, DG, not to forget her pledge to sustain and enhance the ongoing dialogue and action on ‘women in trade’, as a firm believer in the power of trade to lift developing countries, including Nigeria out of poverty.
