The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, supporters and political groups against destroying or defacing campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police described the growing destruction of political campaign materials across the country as an act of political intolerance capable of undermining the democratic process.

The Force said the unlawful removal, destruction or defacement of campaign materials could amount to malicious damage and other criminal offences under existing laws.

Citing Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law on the offence of mischief, the police stressed that political differences or party loyalty do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or obstruct lawful political campaigns.

According to the statement, all political parties and candidates, regardless of affiliation or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law. The Force added that no individual or group has the authority to decide whose campaign materials should be displayed or removed.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents, investigate reported cases and ensure the arrest and prosecution of offenders.

The police further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would also be held accountable where evidence links them to the acts.

The Force urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of political opponents, warning that intimidation, intolerance and other forms of criminal conduct would not be tolerated.

It also assured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining law and order during the political season and preventing acts capable of disrupting the democratic process.
