The Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Government of Switzerland have pledged to deepen their existing defense partnership, with a strategic shift toward non-kinetic security solutions and humanitarian cooperation.
The commitment was formalized during a courtesy visit by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Patrick Felix Egloff, to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Focus on Peacebuilding and Stability
Ambassador Egloff reaffirmed Switzerland’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic and defense ties, emphasizing that his country’s primary interest lies in supporting non-kinetic approaches. These include:
Humanitarian Engagement: Direct support for initiatives aiding displaced or vulnerable populations.
Root Cause Resolution: Addressing insecurity through dialogue and development support.
Institutional Partnerships: Strengthening the frameworks that promote long-term regional peace.
”Switzerland is particularly interested in initiatives that promote peace and stability through non-military means,” Egloff stated, noting the importance of addressing the underlying drivers of conflict.
Nigerian Military Response
General Oluyede expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s continued involvement in Nigeria’s security landscape. He noted that while kinetic operations remain ongoing, Swiss contributions to non-kinetic efforts are vital for a holistic approach to national security.
The CDS voiced optimism that the renewed partnership would lead to more impactful outcomes in strategic cooperation and peacebuilding, reinforcing the bridge between military action and social stability.
