The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resolve its internal dispute regarding the position of National Secretary.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the call during a closed-door meeting with the PDP’s National Working Committee and key stakeholders at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Yakubu stated that the Commission could not recognize the party’s recent notice to convene its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, as it lacked the required signature of the National Secretary, in accordance with legal provisions
Earlier in his remarks, PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, explained that the purpose of the gathering was to discuss the status of the National Secretary position particularly in relation to the letter notifying INEC of the party’s upcoming 100th NEC meeting.
The meeting later continued behind closed doors, after which the PDP Acting Chairman briefed journalists, stating that the party would reconvene internally to deliberate and take further decisions based on the outcome of discussions with INEC.
The PDP delegation to the INEC meeting included the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and other top party chieftains.
