Nigeria and South Africa have condemned the ongoing conflict in Sudan, urging an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
This was contained in a joint statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Mr. Ronald Lamola.
The statement was made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA, by the Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alkasim Abdulkadir.
According to the statement, “the senseless violence has resulted in the loss of innocent civilian lives, exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, displaced millions of people, affecting women and children, and led to the total destruction of critical infrastructure.”
The two ministers, who met on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council in Accra, reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation in various sectors.
They also expressed concern over regional and continental matters, including peace and security on the African continent.
“We call on the international community to take urgent, concrete, and practical steps to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan in an inclusive manner,” the statement read.
The ministers’ call to action comes as the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, resulting in devastating humanitarian consequences. The joint statement highlights the need for a unified response from the international community to address the crisis.
“We must work together to ensure that the people of Sudan receive the assistance they need and deserve,” said Ambassador Tuggar.
The joint statement serves as a testament to the strong historical bilateral relations and bonds of friendship and solidarity between South Africa and Nigeria. The two nations remain committed to expanding and deepening their cooperation in various sectors.
“We will continue to work together to promote peace, security, and development on the African continent,” said Minister Lamola.
The upcoming session of the Bi-National Commission, scheduled to take place in South Africa, will further solidify the partnership between the two nations.
