The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)has expressed worry over the challenges posed by the cashless and currency swap policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ahead of next weekend general election.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Yahaya Bello gave the indication in Abuja at the North-central Stakeholders Roundtable on 2023 election, organised by the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA).
Bello who noted that INEC has taken delivery of 80 percent materials for the election said if nothing is done to address the cash crunch caused by the policies, the Commission would find it difficult to deploy staff and materials for the polls.
Earlier in her remarks, the Executive Director of CTA, Faith Nwadishi advocated that the peace accord signed by politicians be made a legal document that can be used to hold them accountable .
Also speaking, the Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, represented by the Commandant, Special Duties, NSCDC headquarters, Oliver Ugwuja, assured of the preparedness of the corps for the general election.
The need to further extend the timeframe for collection of permanent voters card was further canvassed by stakeholders at the meeting.
