22

At a colorful ceremony marking the 17th International Chinese Language Day, the Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Wang Jianxing, emphasized the role of the Chinese language as a “genetic link” to 5,000 years of civilization and a vital tool for Nigeria’s future development.

The event, held in Abuja, brought together a high-profile audience to explore the cultural and economic resonance of Mandarin under the global theme: “Chinese: Sparkling Colorful Dreams.”

The Vision of Wang Jianxing: Beyond Words

In a heartfelt address, Director Wang Jianxing framed the study of Chinese not merely as a linguistic exercise, but as a “golden bridge” connecting people’s hearts. He pointed out that the timing of the event—during the traditional “Grain Rain” season—was symbolic of growth and the legendary invention of Chinese characters by Cangjie.

Wang Jianxing specifically highlighted three dimensions of the language:

  • A Bridge of Communication: With over 200 million learners globally, he described Chinese as a “gift across time” that opens windows to both ancient wisdom and modern innovation.
  • A Bridge of Harmony: He drew a direct parallel between the Chinese concept of “harmony and coexistence” and Nigerian cultural values, noting that both societies prize communal peace and mutual respect.
  • A Bridge of Dreams: He linked language proficiency to China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), urging Nigerians to see Mandarin as a “shortcut” to fully participating in the high-quality economic cooperation between the two nations.

Honoring the Resilience of Nigerian Students

A standout moment in the Director’s speech was his emotional tribute to the students at the China Cultural Centre. Wang Jianxing expressed deep respect for those who balance full-time careers with their studies.

”You are working hard not only for yourself,” the Director remarked, acknowledging their dedication as a contribution to the development of their country and ethnic groups. He reaffirmed that the Centre’s resources, including the free “Ni Hao China” radio program on FRCN, are public assets designed to empower Nigerians at no cost.

Solidifying Media Partnerships

The ceremony also underscored the synergy between the Cultural Centre and the Nigerian media. Dr. Mohammed Bulama of the FRCN and Comrade Grace Ike of the NUJ FCT Council both commended Wang Jianxing’s leadership for fostering an “exceptionally cordial” environment for journalists. This openness has facilitated the success of the Ni Hao China program, which broadcasts Mandarin lessons to millions across the continent.

The celebration concluded with a vibrant showcase of Chinese cultural performances, blending traditional arts with the contemporary energy of the Nigerian students, effectively bringing the “sparkling dreams” of the theme to life.
