UN Youth Chief Hails NYSC As Key Driver Of Youth Dev.
The Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs and Head of the United Nations Youth Office, Felipe Paullier, has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a critical force in advancing youth development in Nigeria.
Paullier made the remarks during the flag-off of the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) in Kabusa community, Abuja, where he emphasized the Scheme’s role in empowering young people and promoting inclusive development.
According to him, his visit to Nigeria focused on engaging key youth organisations, including NYSC, alongside stakeholders to strengthen the role of young people as partners in development, peace, and human rights.
“I have interacted with many young and old Nigerians who are proud of their NYSC experiences,” he said.
He commended the Scheme’s sustained free medical outreach to rural communities, noting that such interventions contribute significantly to building a healthier and more equitable society.
Earlier, the NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, revealed that since the inception of HIRD in 2014, over five million Nigerians have benefited from the initiative. He added that the Scheme aims to reach about 45,000 more people this year.
Nafiu also highlighted the impact of two newly donated mobile clinics by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, noting that the equipment would significantly expand the reach and scope of the programme.
He further disclosed plans to introduce free minor surgical procedures for rural dwellers under the initiative.
“The NYSC’s free healthcare initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being, as well as Goal 1, which focuses on poverty reduction,” Nafiu said.
He appreciated partners, donors, and corps medical personnel for their dedication and contributions to the programme over the years.
In his remarks, the Dakachi of Kabusa village, Samuel A. Kpowu, expressed gratitude to the NYSC for bringing free healthcare services to the community, describing it as unprecedented.
Also speaking, the Acting Director of Community Development Service and Special Projects, Funmilayo Ajayi, outlined services provided during the two day outreach.
These include health education, medical consultations, laboratory tests, eye care, and referrals.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling and inspection of the two mobile clinics by Paullier alongside the NYSC leadership.
