The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, has died in Abuja, just nine months after he was appointed to head the commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Yusuf, also known as Talban Wushishi, died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 66 after a brief illness, the commission announced.
In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Adelayo Serifat Olurode, the NPC said Yusuf was sworn in as the 8th substantive Chairman of the commission on December 3, 2025.
He spent less than nine months in office before his death.
During his tenure, Yusuf unveiled a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the commission and strengthening its role in the production of reliable demographic data for national planning and development.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf had a distinguished career in public service, with experience spanning education, governance, grassroots politics and community development.
Before becoming NPC chairman, he served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
He was also, until his appointment to the NPC, the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
Reacting to his death, the NPC described Yusuf as a dedicated patriot, astute administrator and compassionate leader whose commitment to national development was unwavering.
The commission expressed its condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger State, and members of the Yusuf family.
