The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi-Niamey transmission line following the collapse of three transmission towers, an incident that has disrupted bulk power transmission to Niamey.
TCN said the transmission line tripped on August 26, 2026, at 5:38 p.m. A trial reclosure carried out at 6:03 p.m. failed as the line tripped instantly again.
According to the company, a fault-finding patrol by its linesmen subsequently revealed that towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed at Chibike village in Kebbi State.
The company attributed the collapse to heavy rainfall and a windstorm that affected the area.
As a result of the incident, bulk power transmission to Niamey through the affected line has been interrupted.
TCN said it has mobilised personnel and resources to the site to begin rehabilitation work on the damaged infrastructure.
The company assured customers that efforts are underway to restore the line to service as quickly as possible.
“We will ensure that all hands are on deck to facilitate the speedy rehabilitation of the collapsed towers and return the line to service in the shortest possible time,” the company said in a statement.
TCN also expressed regret over the disruption to customers in Niamey and pledged to work toward the prompt restoration of normal electricity supply.
