INEC, NOA Partner On Grassroots Campaign To Fight Voter Apathy
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is seeking a stronger partnership with the National Orientation Agency, NOA, to tackle voter apathy, misinformation, and civic disengagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, made the call while receiving the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Professor Amupitan said the visit was more than a routine engagement, stressing that both institutions share the constitutional responsibility of educating Nigerians on democratic values and encouraging active participation in the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman noted that ongoing technological improvements in Nigeria’s electoral process would only achieve their intended impact if citizens understand and trust the system.
Earlier, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, commended INEC for prioritizing voter education. He said the country’s growing youth population makes sustained civic and democratic awareness campaigns more important than ever.
The NOA Director-General called for deeper collaboration between INEC’s Voter Education Department and NOA’s Civic Values and Democracy Education Directorate to boost voter participation, counter misinformation, and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
