INEC Fixes January 16, February 6, 2027 for General Elections, Adjusts Timetable
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
He explained that the review of the earlier dates followed the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral activities.
INEC had previously scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for March 6, 2027, in line with the Electoral Act, 2022.
According to the revised timetable, party primaries, including the resolution of disputes arising from them, will commence on April 23, 2026, and conclude on May 30, 2026.
Campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will commence on September 9, 2026.
All campaigns are to end 24 hours before Election Day.
The Commission urged political parties to strictly adhere to the revised timelines, noting that it will enforce compliance with the provisions of the law.
INEC also disclosed that the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election have been published and are available on its official website and other communication platforms.
In addition, the Osun State Governorship Election, earlier slated for August 8, 2026, has been rescheduled to August 15, 2026.
The Commission noted that some activities relating to the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections have already been conducted.
However, the remaining processes will be implemented strictly in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026.
INEC stated that the revised dates are consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2026.
The Commission called on all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections that reflect the sovereign will of the Nigerian people.
