The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has assured Niger State Governor Umaru Bago that the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody will be thoroughly and transparently investigated.
Disu gave the assurance when he visited the Niger State Government House in Minna, where he met with Governor Bago over the incident.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, made available to journalists in Abuja, the IGP commiserated with the Niger State Government and the people of the state over the deaths.
The 37 suspected illegal miners were reportedly in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) when they died.
Disu said the circumstances surrounding the deaths would be subjected to a thorough and transparent investigation.
The visit, according to the statement, forms part of efforts by the police authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine the circumstances that led to the deaths of the suspected illegal miners while in custody.
