The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties successfully submitted their membership registers to the Commission in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
In a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission said the submissions followed an extension granted after political parties raised concerns over the original timeline during a meeting held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
INEC stated that all registered parties submitted their membership registers by May 8, 2026 two days before the extended deadline.
According to the Commission, a press statement released on March 27, 2026, revised the submission deadline from April 21, 2026, to May 10, 2026. The adjustment was made to align with the provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the actual dates fixed by political parties for their primaries.
The Commission noted that political parties were permitted to conduct their primaries within the approved period from April 23, 2026, to May 30, 2026. It added that party membership registers were required to be submitted not later than 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries.
Haruna said all registered political parties complied with the requirement within the extended timeframe and that the submitted registers would undergo the necessary verification processes in accordance with the law.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections ahead of the 2027 general election.
