Tech-Driven Future, Blue Economy Top Agenda as Nigerian Navy Marks 70th Anniversary – Minister

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to equipping the Nigerian Navy with advanced technologies and resources necessary to secure the nation’s territorial waters and boost the blue economy.

The Honourable Minister of Defence made this pledge as the Special Guest of Honour during the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos. The event served as the grand finale of a weeklong celebration marking seven decades of the Nigerian Navy’s service.

Addressing attendees, the Minister emphasized that the evolution of modern security threats requires the Navy to transition into a highly technological force.

”The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners,” the Minister said. “A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness and contribute significantly to collective security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.”

The Minister noted that the government’s support would specifically focus on integrating advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defense tools, and data-driven operational platforms.

Safeguarding the Blue Economy

Highlighting the economic impact of naval operations, the Minister praised the Service for its role in protecting Nigeria’s strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and critical maritime assets.

According to the Minister, the Navy’s ongoing crackdown on piracy, crude oil theft, and illegal fishing has significantly stabilized the maritime sector, facilitated trade, and boosted investor confidence. He added that the Navy’s contributions extend to internal security operations, working alongside sister agencies to maintain national peace.

Honoring Service and Tradition

The anniversary finale included an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding personnel for their dedication, with several honors presented posthumously to individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The event concluded with the traditional Ceremonial Sunset, a global naval custom symbolizing discipline, duty, and the continuous vigil of naval service.

The Ministry of Defence congratulated the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings, and civilian personnel on the milestone, thanking international partners for their ongoing cooperation in maintaining regional maritime stability.
