The National Universities Commission has approved operational licenses for two new universities established by the Lagos state Government. This is as the commission insists that the number of universities in the country can not meet the present demand for higher education in the country.

Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, made this known in Abuja while presenting operational licences for two new universities to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

Prof Rasheed who justified the commissions decision to approve University of Education, Ijanikin/Epe and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, said unlike some other states that have failed to manage their existing institutions, Lagos has been exceptional in the running of Lagos State University (LASU) for the past 39 years.

The NUC boss further made case for more universities in the country, noting that the two additional institutions which has raised the number of the nations ivory towers to 205, is still not enough when compared to the over 200 million people in the country.

On his part, Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressed delight over the coming on board of the new institutions, saying they were established out of concern to give the Youths more opportunities to achieve their tertiary education dreams.

The Governor also assured of the readiness of the state government to support the new universities to deliver on their mandate.
