IPAC Applauds INEC For Deregistration Of 74 Political Parties, Sets Up 7 Man Interim C’ttee
The Inter Party Advisory Council says the recent steps taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission in deregistering seventy four out of ninety two registered parties in Nigeria was the best thing to happen to the nation’s electoral system in recent times. Speaking shortly after the inauguration of a seven man Interim Management Committee to propel the affairs of the surviving eighteen political parties, the Interim Chairman, Leonard Ezenwa said the decision by the electoral umpire to weed off non-performing parties flows from the provision of section 225 (A) of the 4th Alterations number 9 of the 1999 constitution as amended. He said despite the leadership vacuum the action has created in IPAC, the move will go a long way in sanitising the nation’s electoral space as well as place Nigeria among the comity of nations with serious democratic values. The members of the Interim Management Committee set up by IPAC are drawn from the 18 existing and registered parties that survived the deregistration exercise.
