FG Moves To Strengthen Education Planning Through Reliable Data System

The Federal Government says Nigeria can no longer afford to make education decisions without reliable and accurate data.

This comes against the backdrop of persistent learning challenges and uneven education outcomes across the country.

At the stakeholders’ workshop on the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure, NEDI, convened by the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said poor use of data over the years has weakened the impact of several education interventions.

He described the NEDI initiative as a centralized platform designed to harmonize education records from basic to tertiary institutions nationwide.

The meeting attracted key government officials, including the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo who in the remarks commended the Education Ministry for the initiative, describing it as a strong commitment towards building a modern, inclusive, and evidence based education system capable of improving learning outcomes for Nigerian children and young people.

Other stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai, emphasized the need for stronger collaboration, improved digital infrastructure, and real time data systems to support planning, budgeting, teacher deployment, and student performance tracking across the education sector.

A major feature of the initiative is the proposed National Learner Identity Number, aimed at tracking learners throughout their academic journey and improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in education record keeping.
