Nigeria Urges Dialogue in Sudan, Moves to Protect National Assets

24

Nigeria has called for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan through inclusive political dialogue while signaling a move to strengthen diplomatic and economic protections for its citizens and assets in the conflict-torn nation.

The commitment was formalized during a meeting in Abuja between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal.

Focus on Diplomacy and Dialogue

Ambassador Ahmed underscored that Nigeria’s involvement remains rooted in its role within the African Union. He noted that the conflict’s ripple effects on the Sahel region make a peaceful resolution a matter of shared regional urgency.

”Sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes,” Ahmed said, adding that Nigeria remains a steadfast advocate for Sudanese stability on the global stage.

Concerns Over External Interference

Ambassador Abdelaal briefed the Nigerian government on current recovery efforts in stabilized zones of Sudan. However, he issued a stern warning regarding the role of outside actors in the crisis.

The envoy expressed concern that “continued external interference” is actively prolonging the violence and threatening the security of neighboring African states. He also highlighted the historical significance of the Nigerian diaspora in Sudan, noting their deep integration into Sudanese society.

Strengthening Bilateral Frameworks

To move the relationship forward despite the ongoing challenges, both parties discussed several key administrative and diplomatic initiatives:

  • Joint Committee: The proposed activation of the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to streamline bilateral interests.
  • Asset Protection: Specific measures to safeguard Nigerian-owned assets and provide relief for Nigerian nationals affected by the fighting.
  • State Visit: Preliminary talks regarding an official high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria.

The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to transition from conflict to a period of renewed cooperation and regional prosperity.
