COAS Hosts Joint Inter-Faith Iftar, Urges Unity Amidst Ramadan and Lent

19

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, hosted a combined inter-faith Iftar for officers and soldiers in Abuja, calling for strengthened unity and discipline within the Nigerian Army.

The event, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro, brought together Christian and Muslim personnel currently observing the Lenten and Ramadan fasts, respectively.

Spiritual Convergence and Diversity

In his address, Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted the “rare coincidence” of both fasting seasons occurring simultaneously. He noted that this convergence carries deep spiritual significance, illustrating that diversity is a divine design intended to unite rather than divide.

”Nigeria’s diversity in tribe and religion should serve as a source of strength,” the COAS stated, urging personnel to translate the virtues of fasting—such as dedication and discipline—into their professional military duties.

Commitment to Democracy

The Army Chief reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s “unalloyed loyalty” to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the democratic system. He acknowledged the current administration’s support for the Armed Forces and commended frontline troops for their ongoing sacrifices.

Shaibu charged the personnel to remain resolute in ensuring a secure environment where citizens can engage in socio-economic activities without fear.

A Reflection of Professionalism

Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General IM Abdullahi, described the gathering as historic. He noted that the joint breaking of the fast symbolizes shared values of humility, compassion, and charity.

According to Abdullahi, the event reinforces the Nigerian Army’s identity as a professional family where religious and cultural backgrounds are secondary to the shared purpose of national service.
