Federal Government and stakeholders in the building subsector of the economy have resolved to comprehensively address the issue of frequent building and construction collapses in Nigeria.
The decision was taken in Abuja at a one-day National Conference on the Building and Construction Sector with the theme “adherence to standard practices: Bedrock of sustainable development in building and construction sector.”
Addressing the participants at the conference organised by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, the Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment, John Enoh emphasised need for drastic action to be taken in order to completely address the challenges.
He attributed the absence of SON at Nigeria’s sea ports to reasons why most substandard building materials are illegal smuggled into the country through the ports.
The Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Ifeanyi Okeke said non-adherence to standards and codes of practice in the construction process have resulted in unfortunate cases of building collapses, endangering lives, loss of property and damaging public trust.
The one-day National Conference attracted goodwill messages from relevant government agencies, key stakeholders in the building sector, also witnessed papers presentations and panel discussion on how to better the nation’s infrastructural architecture.
