Shortage Of Teachers At Basic School Level Hits 194,876 Nationwide – UBEC

Indications from the Universal Basic Education Commission reveals that the nations basic school system is short of over 194,000 Teachers. UBEC Deputy Executive Secretary, (Technical) Prof Bala Zakari disclosed this at a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Effective Schools Programme in Abuja.

Presenting the status of the UBE programme in Nigeria, Prof Zakari who used statistics from the 2022 personnel audit in the basic education sector,said about 499,000 teachers are presently engaged our of the over 694,000 required.

Meanwhile, the UBEC Executive secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Services )Prof Isiaka Kolawole in his remarks called for the support of CSOs to enhance education delivery across the country.

This is as he disclosed plans by the commission to roll out an open schooling programme at the basic school level.

Earlier in his remarks, Dr. Osom Osom, Director of Social Mobilisation at UBEC, stated that the event was organised to foster robust interactions and idea-sharing between the Commission and CSOs, with the goal of enhancing basic education delivery.

The event which took place at UBEC Digital Resource Centre, attracted dozens of CSOs drawn from various parts of the country.
