The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially commissioned a new 60MVA, 132/33kV mobile power transformer at the Damaturu Transmission Substation in Yobe State.
The installation, which was completed and energized at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, has raised the substation’s total capacity by 50 percent, increasing it from 120MVA to 180MVA.
According to TCN, the upgrade is designed to improve operational flexibility, enhance system reliability, and provide necessary redundancy during scheduled maintenance or unexpected outages. The increased capacity also ensures the substation can effectively accommodate rising electricity demand in the region.
With the new transformer online, additional bulk electricity has been made available to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC). This boost in supply is expected to improve power distribution to consumers in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, and neighboring communities.
The deployment of the mobile transformer was financed through TCN’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The project forms part of the company’s broader, self-funded infrastructure expansion program aimed at strengthening the national grid and optimizing the efficiency of bulk power delivery across Nigeria.
