The Federal Government has issued a stern warning against the illegal usurpation of diplomatic titles and the fraudulent conferment of ambassadorial designations by unauthorized individuals and groups.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government expressed “grave concern” over the rise of unscrupulous elements parading themselves as diplomats. The Ministry clarified that such titles are not recognized under Nigerian law or international conventions unless duly conferred by the state.
Prohibited Activities and Fraudulent Claims
The Ministry identified several criminal activities currently being monitored by security agencies, including:
The unauthorized use of titles such as “Ambassador” or “Diplomatic Envoy” by unaccredited persons.
The “conferment” of these titles by self-proclaimed foundations, institutes, or NGOs.
The use of fake diplomatic passports, identity cards, and unauthorized vehicle number plates bearing federal insignia.
The government emphasized that ambassadorial titles are never sold for money or granted through membership subscriptions to non-governmental entities.
The Prerogative of the President
The statement cleared any ambiguity regarding the appointment process, stating unequivocally that the power to appoint and accredit Ambassadors rests solely with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
”Besides Mr. President, no individual, group, or non-governmental entity is permitted to confer diplomatic or ambassadorial titles,” the Ministry stated.
Clarification on ‘Brand Ambassadors’
Addressing a common trend, the Ministry noted it does not oppose the appointment of “Brand Ambassadors” for advertising or recognition purposes. However, it warned that such individuals have no legal right to add the title “Ambassador” to their names, as it carries no legal weight in a diplomatic context.
Enforcement and Prosecution
To curb this trend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the VIO, and other security agencies.
Individuals or groups found issuing or using fake diplomatic plates or titles will face prosecution. The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic service and preventing any misrepresentation that could bring the nation into disrepute.
