Former Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Ahmed Lawan, has called for the timely release of approved military funds, warning that delays could affect ongoing operations and the welfare of personnel engaged in the fight against insecurity.

Lawan made the call at the 2026 Conference of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), where defence stakeholders examined ways to strengthen the country’s counter-terrorism efforts.

He said while the armed forces continued to demonstrate courage and commitment on the frontline, effective security operations also depended on adequate funding, modern equipment and intelligence support.

According to him, the National Assembly remains committed to prioritising defence spending and has consistently supported funding requests for the military and other security agencies.

He noted that lawmakers have, in some instances, increased proposed allocations in response to the country’s security challenges.

Lawan also commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for providing additional resources to security agencies but stressed that more needed to be done to improve operational effectiveness.

At the conference, security experts advocated increased investment in technology and intelligence-led operations, arguing that modern security threats require more sophisticated responses.

Lawan urged Nigerians to recognise the sacrifices made by military personnel and support efforts aimed at improving national security and safeguarding lives and property.
