The Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ibrahim Kana, has raised concerns over the growing influence of social media on security reporting and public perception of national security issues.

Speaking at the 2026 Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) Conference, Kana stressed the need for responsible communication and professionalism among media practitioners covering defence and security matters.

He noted that the rapid spread of information through digital platforms has created challenges in information management, particularly in ensuring the accuracy and credibility of reports relating to national security.

According to him, responsible communication is essential to preventing misinformation and maintaining public trust in the dissemination of security-related information.

Kana also urged journalists and other stakeholders to remain committed to professional standards, emphasising the importance of accuracy, balance and ethical conduct in reporting sensitive security issues.

His remarks underscored growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on security communication and highlighted the need for greater vigilance in the management and dissemination of information affecting national security.
