With global health systems increasingly emphasizing preventative care and active longevity, the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated on Saturday at the National Stadium Velodrome, placing a direct spotlight on holistic mental and physical well-being.
Organized by the High Commission of India, this year’s global celebration adopted the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” framing the ancient practice not just as a physical routine, but as a critical, lifelong tool for optimal health.
A Tool for Modern Public Health Challenges
In his address to a diverse gathering of international diplomats, Nigerian officials, and community members, Indian High Commissioner Ambassador Abhishek Singh highlighted yoga’s relevance in combating the stresses of fast-paced modern lifestyles.
According to Ambassador Singh, the practice functions as a holistic health resource by combining gentle movements, stretching, controlled breathing, and mindfulness. These elements directly target key pillars of lifelong wellness, including:
Physical Mobility: Improving balance, flexibility, strength, and overall mobility.
Mental Resilience: Reducing chronic stress and cultivating mental clarity.
Preventative Care: Supporting the body and mind to age with optimal vitality.
”The word ‘Yoga’ originates from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to unite,'” Singh noted, emphasizing that the practice bridges the gap between mind, body, and nature for a comprehensive approach to well-being.
The Global Scale of the Movement
The event underscored yoga’s transition from an ancient Indian tradition to a universally recognized public health asset. The practice gained formal global backing on December 11, 2014, when the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga following an initiative by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its global cultural and wellness significance was further cemented in 2016 with its inscription onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Cross-Sector Support for Wellness
The health-focused initiative brought together key Nigerian administrative and sports leaders, including Ambassador Babagana Wakil (Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs), High Commissioner-Designate to India Muhammad Saidu Dahiru, and leadership from the National Sports Commission, including Chairman H.E. Dr. Shedu Dikko and Director General Dr. Bukola Olopade.
The widespread participation of diplomatic corps members, corporate sponsors like Indorama and African Industries Group, and local students highlighted a shared international commitment to fostering a proactive culture of health, tranquility, and wellness.
