A shipment of 252 metric tons of palm kernel shell activated carbon from Nigeria has arrived at the Hainan Free Trade Port, becoming the first import to benefit from China’s expanded zero-tariff policy for African nations, Haikou Customs announced Wednesday.
The arrival highlights the practical execution of China’s broader initiative to lower trade barriers and deepen economic cooperation across the African continent. Under the agreement, trade costs for eligible imports are significantly reduced, streamlining supply chains between African exporters and Chinese processing hubs.
The duty-free entry follows a policy implementation that took effect on May 1, 2026, granting zero-tariff status to products from 53 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China.
Trade officials anticipate that the successful arrival of the Nigerian cargo will clear a path for increased shipments of raw materials and manufactured goods from Africa into Hainan, which continues to position itself as a key international gateway for Chinese commerce.
