DHQ To Intensify Anti-Subversion Efforts in New Strategic Push

23

The Nigerian Military has announced a comprehensive re-strategization of its communication approach, moving to bridge gaps in information operations and counter-subversive activities by enemy groups.

Speaking at a news conference highlighting gains recorded in the past month, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, emphasized that the military is now prioritizing the “information domain” as heavily as the physical battlefield.

Countering Misinformation

Major General Onoja disclosed that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) is actively working to neutralize misinformation. He noted that regular press engagements and the use of television platforms to showcase regional support for the military are key components of this defensive strategy.

”We are fully aware of the power of misinformation,” Onoja stated. “We are doing our utmost to ensure everything is done to counter it or at least be on top of the information we need, in such a way that we defeat the enemy both on the field and in the information domain.”

Humanizing Military Operations

A significant shift in the military’s strategy for the coming month involves an increased focus on civil-military activities. General Onoja explained that the goal is to “humanize” operations and foster a closer relationship with local communities.

Key pillars of this initiative include:

  • Increased Public Outreach: Plans to reach out more extensively to the public starting in May.
  • Legal Compliance: A renewed commitment to abiding by international humanitarian laws.
  • Information Gathering: Leveraging community trust to improve intelligence and reduce the impact of enemy propaganda.

”The Nigerian military is accountable to the people,” the Director added. “We believe that by coming closer to the people, we’ll be able to gather more information and tone down the impact of information operations by the enemy.”

The Hunt for Bello Turji

Addressing inquiries regarding the notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, General Onoja assured the public that the military remains on his trail. Despite the fugitive’s continued evasion, the Director expressed confidence in his eventual capture.

”He cannot hide for long. He can’t hide forever,” Onoja remarked. “He must slip up at some point, and we will take advantage of that.”
